We think the best thing about living on Virginia's Eastern Shore is the opportunity to interact with nature, both plants and animals. Island Queen Apiary on Chincoteague Island is one good example of this.
This family-run apiary (that's a place that raises bees) offers visitors a chance to see how honey is made and to buy a full line of naturally-made, honey products, from raw honey to body care products. They also host a full schedule of classes on topics ranging from crafts to beekeeping to cooking with honey.
Island Queen honey, which includes summer honey, butter bean honey and fall honey, gets rave reviews, with many saying it is the best honey they have ever tasted. We think it has just a slight salty taste, which, to us, evokes the sea that surrounds the island.
Island Queen Apiary is open daily during the summer and fall. Call for current hours. Their honey products and staff can also be found at any number of local markets and food festivals during the summer and harvest seasons, including Chincoteague Market.
