The family-owned Exmore Diner offers wholesome food fast. They utilize many ingredients sourced from local fishermen and farmers including fresh drum fish (when in season) and turnip greens. In a day when most color has disappeared from menus, it’s refreshing that they offer a wide variety of home-cooked vegetables - the assortment changes each day.
Wildly popular with the “retro roadfood” crowd, the Exmore Diner’s home is a vintage Silk City diner manufactured in Paterson, New Jersey and originally installed in Exmore in 1954.
Exmore Diner sees its mission as serving time-honored traditional food at very reasonable prices, with many of its menu items coming from nearby. In season, blue crabs are a staple on the menu, which vie with seaside oysters and fried drum ribs as the greatest regional delicacy.
Smith Island, a marshy Chesapeake Bay archipelago shared by Maryland and Virginia, long ago produced a signature dessert, Smith Island Cake—recognized by its many thin layers of cake and rich icing. Exmore Diner is a reliable place to find this scarce, labor-intensive confection.
