Please call or email Miriam for an appointment.
Miriam Riggs designs and paints durable canvas floor cloths and murals that are as beautiful as they are practical. Inspired by rug designs from all over the world, she often interprets elements through an Eastern Shore lens. Case in point is this (above) Kazak-influenced floor cloth - says Miriam, "When I see those abstract, colorful tribal shapes, I just immediately imagine them as our native animal forms".
The environment around her studio is teeming with small wildlife of all types. She watches and studies creatures with wonder and delight, then simplifies and repeats their forms to instill harmony and rhythm.
Miriam states, "By increasing awareness of the finely balanced natural world, I hope to aid in its protection. I create designs in a wide variety of media, some inspired by classical art from other cultures, some derived from nature, others out of pure imagination. Since much of my work is done on commission, it is linked not only to the natural world, but also to the dreams of those who request it."
The Cashville studio is open by appointment, and you can see a small sampling of her work at the Barrier Islands Center, in the floor cloth above, plus a mural and a runner (also above) in the Barrier Islands Center Education Building.
