Most of the yarn produced at Ten Good Sheep comes directly from their flock of Romney/Columbia, Babydoll Southdown, and Teeswater sheep. As the business has grown, they have begun to incorporate fiber from a host of other animals, including Bactrian Camel, Alpaca, and Tibetan Yak.
The multicolor yarns produced by Ten Good Sheep are the final expression of a labor of love. Shepherdess Karen Belknap tends her flock with the help of two Great Pyrenees. She shears the sheep, washes the fleece, dyes the wool, cards the wool, and then spins by hand. The look and feel are at once rustic and luxurious.
On a Girl Scout field trip at age 9, Belknap remembers: “A very old woman in a long skirt was demonstrating spinning on a spinning wheel to our gaggle of giggling little girls. That memory of the long-ago field trip was the seed that would germinate decades later, in 1998, as Ten Good Sheep.”
