Shore native Bethany Simpson communicates a refreshing joie de vivre in her coastal-themed work depicting the bounty of the land and water. Her exuberant, colorful images are both playful and full of wonder. Lemon Tree Gallery and Machipongo Trading Co both represent her.
Simpson’s work has been called “Folk Meets Fauve,” the latter a reference to her penchant for vivid hues. Her inspiration is drawn from local farms and gardens, orchards and wineries, seaside boats and chicken coops, all stylized and fused using bold outlines as well as colors.
“As a child, being home schooled from preschool to twelfth grade, art was a part of my daily life,” says Simpson, who is self-taught in painting and began getting serious about her craft at age 20.
“I paint the way I see things,” she says, “with vibrancy, life, and movement, much like the changing tides.” Lemon Tree Gallery and Machipongo Trading Co both represent her.
