For years, passersby wistfully looked at the sad, dilapidated boarding house on Mason Avenue, wishing for its renovation. In 2018 their prayers were answered and the Northampton Hotel opened its doors, having been transformed over the course of 3 years into a stately swan of a building. Their restaurant and gift store allow us to experience the hospitality of the hotel even if we aren't staying there.
Owner Beth Walker began renovating houses as a way of coping with the Army-like frequency with which she and her husband moved because of his job. With a degree in historic preservation, she has a unique understanding of the authenticity that needs to be retained in any project, and The Northampton Hotel is no exception. Her sister, fellow native Pam Thornes, is an enthusiastic cohort, and now manages the place full-time with her husband.
Are you on the beach and hungry? Want wholesome food fast? Due to its close proximity, Cape Charles beachgoers flock to the hotel to buy delicious Carry-Out concoctions from sandwiches to salads. While there, enjoy a custom cocktail on the porch before heading back into the sun.
Dinner is when the chefs show off. Changing week by week and featuring seasonally inspired cuisine, the food is delightful and thoughtfully prepared, and served both inside and outside on the grandest porch in Cape Charles. They pride themselves on using locally sourced ingredients such as Pickett's Harbor peaches, Perennial Roots free-range pork, and Seafield Farm's produce.
